I performed my PhD under the mentorship of Dr. Jose Manuel Garcia-Verdugo (University of Valencia, Spain 2006-2011), one of the pioneer in describing adult neurogenesis. My main research described how the postnatal exposure to the mutagen N-ethyl-nitrosourea (ENU) disrupts neurogenesis and induces neurofunctional impairments in a mouse model (Eur J Neurosci 2010, PlosOne 2011). Results from this research demonstrated that non-carcinogenic concentrations of ENU are also harmful for the health by exhausting neural stem cell compartments. Furthermore, I also studied how aging compromises the adult neurogenic niches in mice, describing the changes occurring at the cellular and molecular levels (Front Cell Neurosci. 2013, Glia 2014, Front Cell Neurosci. 2015). These studies highlight the concept that stem cells persist in the aged brain in a quiescent state and provide new insight into the use of endogenous activation as a possible strategy for fighting neurological diseases associated with senescence.

After earning my PhD degree (2011), I moved to the USA to join the Brain Tumor Stem Cell Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins Hospital, led by Dr. Alfredo Quiñones-Hinojosa. Dr. Quiñones-Hinojosa is an internationally recognized neurosurgeon. During my postdoctoral stay at Johns Hopkins, I studied the impact of oncological radiotherapy on normal brain tissue and neurofunction (Stem Cells 2012, Stem Cells 2014, Stem Cell Res. 2016). These reports provided a more complete understanding of the effects that radiotherapy has on the neural stem cell compartments. We also demonstrated that radiation weakens the regenerative capacity of the brain. Simultaneously, I was also involved in a project evaluating the role of NHE9 in glioblastoma progression, using patient-derived brain tumor initiating stem cells (Nat Commun 2015). Results from this report evidenced that NHE9 could be used as a novel chemotherapeutic target to treat glioblastoma.

In 2014, I returned to Spain to continue my work on stem cells field by joining the Dr. Bernat Soria´s group at CABIMER. Dr. Bernat Soria has been worldly recognized by his contribution to the field of biomedical sciences. His group gave me the opportunity of meeting a highly qualified team in both basic and clinical research on regenerative medicine and cell therapy with the know-how of producing cellular medicament under Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP). Here, I worked in several projects based on cell therapy to treat major health problems, such diabetes or ischemia (Mol Ther 2018, Mol Ther-Nucleic Acids 2018). Furthermore, I have developed my own line of research to investigate cell-based strategies to prevent radiation-induced damages in the brain.
